| A few years ago I lived on the beach in North Carolina. My days started with a walk at sunrise...the cloud formations, with reflecting colors on the ocean and wet sand, was a wonderful start for the day. During the course of the walk I often times would see turtle tracks from the water edge to the higher dunes, where the loggerhead had laid her eggs during the night time hours. I would report the nest to the local "Turtle Society" and they would come and mark the site, and in a specific number of days, when it was hatching time, there would be a group come to sit the nest at night and be sure the babies went to the sea, and not toward a porch light. The survival rate is so small even if they make the journey from the nest to the waves..They are amazing creatures. |
